RMUTP Ranks 300–400 Globally for Supporting Sustainable Development Goals

Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon has been ranked among the top 300-400 universities globally for its efforts in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically in the area of making cities and human settlements sustainable. The university is also focused on developing into a modern urban society university.

Dr. Natworapol Rachsiriwatcharabul, President of Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon, revealed that Times Higher Education (THE), a global university ranking organization from the United Kingdom, has announced the results of the 2024 THE Impact Rankings, which assess universities’ efforts in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A total of 2,152 higher education institutions from 125 countries participated in the rankings, including 77 institutions from Thailand.

In the category of “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG 11), RMUTP was ranked among the top 300-400 universities globally, placing joint 6th among Thai universities and 1st among the Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon group. In the overall ranking, RMUTP was placed within the 1001-1500 range globally, sharing 29th place in Thailand and ranking 1st among the Rajamangala University of Technology institutions.

The scores used in these rankings were derived from four key SDGs: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The assessment was based on four main areas: Research, Stewardship (university policies and practices), Outreach (engagement with local, regional, and global communities), and Teaching. The overall score for each university was calculated based on the results for SDG 17, which accounted for 22% of the total score, and the three highest-scoring SDGs for the institution, each contributing 26% to the total score.

“This is the first year that Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon has participated in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, following the United Nations’ sustainable development policies and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation’s (MHESI) support for higher education institutions to develop high-quality research. This is a significant source of pride for us, as it reflects the exceptional quality of our evidence-based education, recognized internationally. It also demonstrates our commitment to becoming a truly sustainable, socially responsible global university,” said the President.

Dr. Sorasutee Buapool, Assistant to the President for Research and Innovation Development and the principal person responsible, stated that this year, Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon (RMUTP) participated in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024, conducted by the global university ranking organization based in the United Kingdom. The university was evaluated across eight Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the following results:

SDG 1: No Poverty is ranked between 801-1000 globally, tied for 8th place among universities in Thailand, and tied for 3rd place among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Ranked 1001 globally, joint 8th among Thai universities, and joint 2nd among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 4: Quality Education – Ranked 1001-1500 globally, joint 6th among Thai universities, and joint 2nd among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Ranked 601-800 globally, joint 6th among Thai universities, and 1st among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Ranked 601-800 globally, joint 8th among Thai universities, and joint 2nd among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Ranked 301-400 globally, joint 6th among Thai universities, and 1st among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 13: Climate Action – Ranked 801 globally, joint 6th among Thai universities, and joint 3rd among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Ranked 601-800 globally, joint 10th among Thai universities, and joint 1st among Rajamangala University of Technology institutions. 

“This achievement stems from the collaborative efforts and dedicated work of everyone involved, including the administrators, faculty members, staff, and students, who have all worked intensely together to drive the university towards excellence, earning international recognition. The university has continuously focused on improving the quality of education under the vision of the President to develop a modern urban university. This includes advancements in research, teaching, academic services, and social engagement. Therefore, I believe that in the future, we will achieve even better global rankings,” concluded Dr. Sorasutee Buapool.
